Although apricot oil is expensive in most parts of the world, it is abundant in Hunza. Gyaling/Gral is commonly eaten for breakfast and always paired with Hunza-style namkeen (salty) or herbal chai. It will certainly fill you up before you head off on one of Pakistan’s many hikes!

Ghilmindi is another unique dish from Hunza cuisine that you definitely won’t be able to try at home! It’s one of my absolute favorites, and trying it is a must when you're in Hunza. Wheat chapatis are pan-fried, cut into triangles, and then stuffed with a yogurt-cheese mixture made from fresh cow's milk. Coriander, mint, and onions are added for extra flavor, and sometimes apricot oil is included as well. It's also common to add nuts or nut shavings both inside and on top, creating a unique taste that you won’t easily find in restaurants in Lahore, Islamabad, or Karachi.

Most people living in Hunza work in the fields, so they need highly energetic food to meet their body's requirements. Diram Fitti is a perfect choice for them. You will struggle to dislike hoilo garma, which is my all-time favorite dish from the Hunza Valley. The dish is a delectable and healthful combination of locally grown spinach and aloo with dough made from organic flour. It tastes pretty much like the pasta dish alfredo you never knew you needed. For me, the real reason hoilo garma is so exceptional is that it's typically topped with chopped apricot seeds, which give it a cheesy flavor without really using any cheese.

7) Buttering Doudo

A typical Hunza soup that is mostly consumed in the winter is buttering doudo. This dish's use of dried apricots is what really sets it apart. This soup has a distinct flavor that is made using famous apricots from the area, sugar water, and lemon. Although doudo comes in other forms, none evoke flavors quite like this one. Pakistan is known for its excellent Hunza Valley apricots, which offer more benefits than just flavor. Particularly buttering doudo is highly regarded for strengthening the immune system and helping with constipation and colds. After touring the Baltit Fort, one of Asia's most famous sites, you may grab a bowl at Karimabad.
